Fourth Pinoy summits Everest/ First women's traverse of Everest

Ok, so the three lady climbers have reached the Nepal base camp safely. They are the FIRST ever all-woman team to traverse Mt. Everest. They also achieved this by climbing the difficult north route (Tibet).

As a bonus, a fourth Filipino mountaineer summitted Mt. Everest last 17 May. The Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Inc. (MFPI - Home) e-group reported that past president Reggie Pablo summitted.

Photo Credit : Abrahm Lustgarten Everest Base Camp sits over three miles above sea level (17,600 feet), high enough to cause severe head rushes and weight loss. But from base camp, climbers must ascend another 12,000 feet to reach the legendary apex.

Pinoy summits of Everest have a ripple effect on outdoor sports, adventure travel, and environmental initiatives in the Philippines/Asia. All of them of who have summitted are also known for their commitment to the environment, search and rescue, education, etc. and have their own respective initiatives.

Mabuhay!

21st century killing fields

So there's a new immigration bill being proposed. Foremost, they propose that it will be skill and not family ties that will determine a path to "legalization" or citizenship.

As if the majority of undocumented immigrants are not hardworking and dedicated enough.

A few weeks ago, I attended a presentation of a group of U of Arizona students who did an alternative spring break in the border towns of Mexicali and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. They were hosted by local partners and the U of A Newman Center. What struck me the most was what one student observed about the border fence and tighter border security measures. They said that these structures have funneled border crossers into the Arizona desert or areas with harsh physical (and even security) conditions.

Only the fittest survive.

Only the fittest survive to work and serve in America.

How did the beauty of the desert end up becoming America's killing fields?

Three Filipinas conquer Everest. Noelle and Janet are U.P. Mountaineers (UPM).

Mabuhay kayo!

They will be descending unto the Nepal side. In effect, they will be the first all women team to traverse Mt. Everest.

Congratulations once again to the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition! After the successful summit of Leo Oracion and Pastor Emata, as well as UPMer Romy Garduce, what a way to celebrate the first anniversary of that summit. By the way, they and other FPMEE were in the base camps supporting their fellow climbers.

As we liked to say at UPM, "Isang malaking .....!"
